Our Services
Supporting early relational health in early education and care systems
Our Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (ECMHC) Program partners with early education and care providers to support the social and emotional well-being of young children. Grounded in trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices, our program works to transform systems of care and promote nurturing communities where children can thrive.
Our services utilize reflective practice, classroom consultation, and experiential training to foster secure attachments between children and their caregivers. Our consultants empower caregivers to understand and respond effectively to challenging behaviors, and support children's emotional regulation and resilience. These efforts reduce caregiver stress and burnout, improve classroom quality, and strengthen caregiver-child relationships.
By prioritizing the development of adults who play critical roles in children’s lives, our program transforms early childhood systems into communities of care. Together, we’re laying a positive foundation for children’s lifelong mental health and well-being.

Our Three Pillar Model: Training, Reflective Practice, and Consultation
We use an integrated approach that transforms not just classrooms, but entire early childhood systems:
- Training: Experiential learning equips caregivers, managers, and program leaders with practical skills to foster healthy relationships, addressing trauma and promoting social-emotional development.
- Reflective Practice: Trauma-informed supervision and group consultation nurture professional growth, offering caregivers a supportive space to reflect, learn, and build resilience.
- Classroom Consultation: On-site collaboration with educators ensures that strategies are grounded in real-world contexts, enhancing their effectiveness.
The Impact of Our ECMHC Model
“They help us see what we can’t see sometimes, and we work together—it helps the whole child, the whole classroom, the whole teaching team to give the child what they need.”
Who We Work With
The ECMHC Team at CERS provides consultation services to early education and care partners across Greater Boston. Our ECMH Consultation Program, established in 2006, emerged from a meaningful collaboration between the Center for Early Relationship Support and Horizons for Homeless Children's innovative early education program in Boston.
